Live and Learn Abroad

The Lake Champlain Waldorf School is excited to offer high school students the opportunity to participate in our International Exchange Program. Waldorf high schools worldwide provide many choices and possibilities for students to step into a different culture while continuing their Waldorf education. Living abroad, whether for two months, a semester, or an entire year, can be an experience that stays with you for a lifetime!

Living in a foreign land and taking part in its daily life opens a window into a world beyond one’s familiar territory. What better way to broaden one’s view of the world? You gain proficiency in another language, make new friends, and experience a new culture. You explore new cuisine, witness unique landscapes and architecture, and by stepping into the world in a bold way, you become confident and independent. Through observing and experiencing similarities and differences between cultures, you can’t help but deepen your self-awareness.

Lake Champlain Waldorf School has developed exchange relationships with several European schools in Germany, Switzerland, France and Hungary. The school is also exploring the possibilities of exchanges with other countries, although students are encouraged to go to a country where the foreign language they are studying is spoken.

The two main ways students and families can participate in the International Exchange Program are as exchange students or as host families. Although not required, we strongly urge families sending their student abroad to host an international student. The ideal time for a student to do an exchange is in their tenth or eleventh grade year. Exchange duration can range from a minimum of six weeks to an entire school year. Families interested in hosting an international student can do this even if they don’t have a high school age student or a student going abroad.

Faculty and staff members help guide and facilitate the exchange process, including finding a school and an appropriate host-family abroad. Many of the students at Lake Champlain Waldorf High School have participated in this program and are available to share their experiences. Feel free to contact Alice Lissarrague, International Exchange Coordinator, at (802)425-6195 ext 28 or alissarrague@lakechamplainwaldorfschool.org with inquiries.
