You Can Make Monthly Payments
Monthly payments through your credit card is a convenient way to maximize your support with little impact to your budget. For instance, a gift of $1,000 can be spread over 10 months, for $100/month. If you would like to set up a convenient payment plan, please contact Lisa Espenshade.

Stock
Making a gift of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds held for more than one year) is a great way to give to the Lake Champlain Waldorf School. Transferring such assets will likely provide you with even greater tax savings than you would receive with an equivalent gift of cash.

Let’s say you want to make a gift of $1,000 to the Annual Giving Fund. You have stock that has a low tax cost. For instance, maybe you bought it a long time ago or you received it as a gift from a parent or grandparent. Let’s say that the tax cost was $200. You could sell the stock for $1,000 and make a gift of $1,000, but if you did that you would owe tax on the $800 gain you made. Alternatively, you might write a check for $1,000 from your savings account. However, you have already paid taxes on that money. Yes, you will get a deduction for your check, but it doesn’t balance out.

Instead, you should gift the stock. You will be able to take a federal income tax deduction in the amount of the fair market value of the asset on the date of donation. You can take this deduction for up to 30% of your adjusted gross income in the year of donation. Furthermore, you may enjoy this tax deduction while paying no capital gains taxes on the security’s appreciated value. As with gifts of cash, you can carry your deduction forward up to five years, including the year of donation.

If you would like to transfer gifts of stock, please contact Lisa Espenshade.
