STUDENT
SUPPORT
The Student Support team consists of two Educational Support Specialists, the School Counselor, and the Head of School, with the assistance of our Pedagogical Coordinator and numerous teaching assistants. Together, this team addresses each student’s individual needs in the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional realm. Additionally, our Educational Support Specialists and School Counselor serve as liaisons to the public school district and private assessment centers when testing is recommended to determine the presence of a learning disability.

Our pedagogy, philosophy, and program includes implicit methodologies that support students’ individual needs. This includes strong teacher-student relationships, interdisciplinary programming that emphasizes movement, art and visual supports and partnerships between families and teachers. In addition, aspects of our curriculum are designed to implicitly work with students’ social-emotional needs. For example, pedagogical stories are told to subtly work with dynamics in the classroom, school wide assemblies promote positive culture and climate, and class meetings are held on a weekly basis where there is opportunity provided for authentic and respectful sharing between classmates. Additionally, the classroom guidelines and boundaries are gently but firmly integrated into each class continuously as a way to support students' sense of safety and comfort through the daily rhythm. LCWS is actively working to increase class-wide accommodations that are available to all students, including alternate seating, headphones, quiet spaces for resets, visual aids, and scaffolded instructions (e.g., offering both oral and written instructions, opportunities to take notes, and have notes provided when needed). The Educational Support Specialist and School Counselor collaborate with class teachers and co-teach lessons in the classroom weekly to model inclusive instructional and social-emotional skills and strategies.
-
When individual students need more explicit support, the student support team works closely with the teachers to develop student specific and differentiated strategies to implement in and out of the classroom. For Tier 2 supports, this can include specific seating changes, regular check-ins with the teacher or a student support member, planned access to quiet spaces to reset, previewing content with teachers, and providing extra support during known times of challenge. The school documents incidents through their “incident reports” and utilizes these reports to collect data and inform differentiated supports for students. Incidents of conflict are addressed through restorative conversations, supported by the teacher and/or student support team member.
When a student needs more intensive intervention, a student support plan will be created for the student and a student support meeting will be held. The student support meeting will include the class teacher, caregivers, and at least one member of the student support team and will discuss observed behaviors and plans for additional interventions. This may include small group targeted interventions with the Educational Support Specialist or support staff, small group or individual meetings with the school counselor, the development of a safety plan, and/or additional interventions. When Tier 3 interventions are offered, the student support plan will be reviewed and updated on a regular basis to ensure it is meeting the evolving needs of the students.
Educational Support
Educational Support Specialists are committed to advocating for and supporting accessible and optimal learning environments for all students. Educational Support Specialists, through their work, demonstrate their commitment that all students have the ability to learn and lead meaningful and successful academic and adult lives. We utilize a strengths-based approach to identify a student’s academic and social emotional needs, while holding and appreciating their many complexities, talents, and aspirations.
Our Educational Support Specialist works collaboratively with classroom and subject teachers, caregivers, tutors, and related service providers to identify student needs, draft academic support plans, and determine an accessible, inclusive, and developmentally-appropriate implementation of curriculum and academic screeners. In addition, our Educational Support Specialist offers the following to the highest need students as resources allow:
small group targeted intervention,
progress monitoring,
data collection to ensure students are making progress towards identified goals.
The Educational Support Specialist liaises between our school and our home district (CVSD) to facilitate and carry out the special education evaluation process, when warranted. This process includes working closely with caregivers, classroom teachers, outside providers, and intervention group teachers to provide relevant data and information to ensure a cohesive and informative evaluation process. The Educational Support Specialist is trained and knowledgeable in Special Education law as it pertains to student, school, and caregiver rights.
School Counseling
The School Counseling program at LCWS supports preschool- to high school-aged students’ academic, career and social-emotional development by collaborating with class teachers, the Student Support Team, families, and outside resources to ensure equitable educational outcomes for all students. The school counselor reviews relevant school data to address student needs and delivers research based interventions to support student growth.
-
Tier 1 interventions include collaboration with the classroom teacher to support an inclusive classroom environment, teaching classroom lessons that promote social and emotional learning, classroom observations, involvement in defining policies and procedures that meet the needs of all students, and supporting school positive culture and climate through staff collaboration and participation in school-wide events.
-
Tier 2 Interventions include small groups that focus on a variety of social, emotional, and academic topics, student support plan development and outlining data collection strategies, consultation with classroom teachers, families, and the student support team, and student support plan progress monitoring.
-
Tier 3 interventions include short-term individual counseling sessions, individual observations, providing referrals to families, consultations with families, school staff, outside agencies, therapists, and medical providers, development and progress monitoring of individual student plans, and crisis management.
The school counselor honors privacy and confidentiality to the greatest extent possible and balances this professional obligation with the safety of all students, parental rights, and adherence to laws, policies, and ethical standards within a school setting.
