TRIPS & TRAVEL
Experience your education.
Some of the best learning happens outside the classroom. In addition to a rich academic foundation, you’ll get up from behind the desk and step out into the world on a regular basis so that you can experience your education first-hand.
High School Humanities Teacher Sage Chase-Dempsey talks about the importance of outdoor education and how it shapes our students into lifelong leaders.
Below are examples of trips we’ve taken recently:
The Odyssey
Each fall, after reading Homer’s epic, our freshmen set out on their own odyssey. They pack their bags and set off onto Lake Champlain, where they boat and camp for an entire week, learning resilience, perseverance, and collaboration. When they return, the community comes together to give them a hero’s welcome.
Hermit Island
At the beginning of senior year, students travel to Hermit Island, Maine to study marine biology. The island is home to a number of coastal tide pools where students observe and document Atlantic aquatic life. They spend the week camping on the island with students from Waldorf schools across the northeast — a truly formative experience.
Winter Camping
As we say in Waldorf education: there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing. Our juniors set out in the dead of winter to a remote campsite in northeastern Vermont. This trip is designed to test their limits - they bring all of the supplies they'll need, hike through the snow to the campsite, and venture out each day into the elements.
The Constitution
What better way to connect with American history than to see it up close? After learning about the creation of our country’s founding documents, students traveled to Philadelphia to see where they were written. This tour took them through the oldest parts of the city to see what the world was like when our nation was created.
New York City
The Big Apple is home to some of our country’s most important cultural landmarks. Students head into the city to visit world-class museums, take in icons of urban architecture, and see a Broadway show.
